Escape of the Dead 1
Your heart is racing.
You’re trying to get a hold of things, with only one thing in mind-
Survival.
In an apocalyptic world, you are hidden in your garage, trying to fix the car that is your one hope for escaping the hoard of zombies that are coming your way. You are caught in perhaps the most crucial multitasking of your life- firing at the creepy zombies, fixing the barricade, and repairing your car. The more time passes by, the more zombies are arriving at your lawn.
Can you make it? Do you have what it takes?
Escape of the Dead 1 is an adrenaline and suspense-filled one-player game developed by Experimental Playground, and might be the perfect game to start your print-and-play journey!
Being a fan of The Walking Dead, World War Z, and The Last of Us, we had a great time playing the game, and found many reasons as to why you will love this game! Here are a few reasons:
1. Easiest to assemble and learn
Escape of the Dead 1 comes in a one-page (A4) format, black and white, which can be printed using any one-color basic printer. The graphics and art of the game are easy to the eye, very simple, and neat. If you have a printer at home, office, or have a printing store near you, all you need is to print one page. Once printed, cut the six zombies, as well as the three tools (hammer, wrench, and hammer) using a pair of scissors. The only extra element that you need in this game is 4 six-sided dices (D6), which you can easily avail from stores like Amazon.
As far as the time required to learn the game is concerned, we believe it will take you 15 minutes, at max- around 3 minutes to see the manual, and 12 minutes for a gameplay video. The A4 printout for the game has the manual, but we always find it efficient to watch a round of the gameplay to know about the game. Here’s a video of one of our favorite PnP YouTubers Sir Thecos who played a round of Escape of the Dead 1 that helped us get a grasp of this game:
2. Game Duration
One of the best aspects of this game is the duration it takes for each round. When you start playing the game, it may take you 20 minutes to play the game. But with time, as you get the hang of the game, the duration will drop to 10-15 minutes. This enables the game to be played repetitively- being an exciting game that is hard to win, we can ensure you will aim for at least two to three rounds of the game at-a-go. So, 30 minutes of thrill!
3. The Golden Dilemma
One aspect that we loved the most about Escape of the Dead is the dilemma of what to prioritize. If you are too hell-bent on attacking the zombies and fixing the fence, it will take you forever to fix the car. If you ignore the increased number of zombies on your lawn and ignore fixing the fence, the zombies will fully damage the barricade and you to lose the game. In this game of dilemma and opportunity cost, you have to be calculative and think of each step ahead of time. And of course, at some stage, you have to take the leap of faith to fully fix the car and win this game, but only at the right moment!
4. It is FREE!
You read that right, this cliffhanger of a game is free of cost, and you can download it from pnparcade.com. With zero cost-of-purchase, and with minimal cost of print and 4 dice, we highly recommend PnP newbies to give this game a shot! A big thanks to Experimental Playground for enabling everyone to have this fantastic experience.
How we assembled and shelved it
After downloading the game, we had two options in mind- either to go for the minimalistic paper print or to have it printed and laminated. Going minimalistic is fine as long as you are aiming to only play it for a few times, but do keep in mind that there are smaller game pieces that you will cut out from the print, that are susceptible to getting lost or damaged. Which is why we opted for the second option- lamination. Lamination might get frowned upon in the short run for environmental concerns, but we aim to shelve it for decades, for all our PnP community members to give it a shot at. So we chose to laminate the game, instead of having to constantly re-print the game every time we wanted to give it a shot! The laminated print, and the small gaming pieces that we cut out of it, are quite sturdy enough so they also enhanced the overall gaming experience. We contained the game inside a paper folder, so the game took minimal shelving space.
When it comes to playing games, we always go the extra mile! Read about it, and see if you want to give it a try:
Playing with a group
Even though it is a one-player game, we decided to play in the presence of three other members. While one player played, the other three either advised or tried to contradict every move the player was making. Having three viewers around the player made the gaming experience much more dramatic, and once the round was over, the game was passed on to a viewer who then played the game. So, there were four rounds of the game played by the four members, and of course- the winners earned the bragging rights!
Create an atmosphere!
You are literally in the middle of an apocalypse! So set up the atmosphere of the room you are playing in; be it by dimming the lights, playing the grueling sound of zombies on a speaker, or even by making your friends roleplay as zombies. The sky’s the limit!
Customize the gaming components
If you are a creative soul, you can make your hand-crafted version of this game! Draw and color six different zombies of your taste, illustrate the tools in the game, and even hand-paint the lawn, barricade, and garage. You can even 3D-print the zombies with the help of a mini 3D Printer, to further enhance the gaming experience. However, of course, keep in mind that the customized version is only for your personal collection!
So what are you waiting for? Dive into the apocalyptic world full of zombies, and make the right moves to escape out of it alive!
